Many years ago, I coined the statement: “Does Your Logo Work as Hard as You DO?” I used it for marketing purposes for years … it still emerges every so often. But I frequently find myself wondering what a company's logo would say if it could actually “speak.”
Would it tell customers that the company is professional, established, and trustworthy? Would it communicate quality, attention to detail, and pride in its work? Or would it leave people questioning whether this company is keeping up with the times?
Say “Hello” With Your Logo
As we’ve discussed in previous articles (available here and here), the reality is that your logo is often the first introduction people have to your business. It appears on your website, vehicles, uniforms, business cards, signs, social media profiles, invoices, and promotional products.
Long before a customer speaks with you or experiences your service, they're already forming opinions based on the image your brand presents. Whether we like it or not, people make assumptions quickly, and your logo is often leading that conversation.
Logos that Boost Customer Confidence
A strong logo doesn't just identify your company: it reinforces confidence. When paired with consistent branding across apparel, signage, vehicles, printed materials, and digital platforms, it helps tell a story of professionalism and stability. It assures customers that they're dealing with a company that pays attention to details and takes pride in its work.
For instance, ever go into a liquor store to buy a bottle of wine? I, not a wine drinker, know very little about the liquid. But I know a good-looking logo or label when I see one. Am I looking for sophisticated? Or just a fun, simple bottle? Either way, when I see the right-looking logo or label ... BAM! That’s the one I’m choosing. That’s the winner. Without knowing anything about how it tastes.
Brand Evolution vs. Revolution
That doesn't mean every company needs to drop everything right now and do a complete rebrand or float a flashy new design. In fact, some of the most recognizable brands in the world evolve gradually, over decades. The important question is whether your current logo accurately reflects the company you've become.
Many businesses grow significantly, expand their services, improve their capabilities, and invest in their people — yet they still present themselves with a logo and brand identity that were created years ago (for what was a much smaller organization).
The Beatings Will Continue, Until …
Some of this column is a reiteration of points I’ve made the last couple of months. But, I felt it necessary to drive the point home and lay the strong foundation for us to all build on.
So, this month, take a moment to look at your logo through the eyes of a potential customer. If it could talk, what would it say about your business? More importantly, is it telling the story you want people to hear? Is it “with the times”?
